Sunset Beach Playground

The total cost to fully develop this new amenity was $130,000. Many donations large and small, plus four fundraising events conducted by Friends of Lake Panorama, raised $80,000 to provide the base support for this new playground. The Lake Panorama Association provided an additional $50,000. The LPA also provided technical and construction assistance. The playground opened in July 2016.

The playground is geared to ages 5 through 12, and has a play capacity of 165. The main play structure includes multiple slides, bridges and places to climb. Several smaller play structures surround the main area, including a modern take on old-fashioned merry-go-rounds and teeter-totters.

The main tower was the first to be built as playground construction got underway July 11. LPA staff assisted the project by preparing the site, and delivering and spreading pea gravel to form the base.

The playground construction took four days to complete.

One feature of the playground is a bridge between two structures that is in the shape of a bear. Here workers maneuver the bear into place.

Kaylee Pflieger, nine-year-old daughter of Dan and Melissa Pflieger, was the first child to test out the new playground when it was completed July 14. The family lives near Sunset Beach.

Maxwell Schrieber tries out one of six slides at the new Sunset Beach playground. He is the great-grandson of Merlin and Jody Muench, who live near Sunset Beach. Jody Muench is a member of the Friends of Lake Panorama board of directors.

The south side of the playground features several rocks and logs to climb on and crawl through.

Kurt Johnson refurbished a large bench that had to be moved to make way for the playground. He volunteered his time to replace, stain and seal the wood, paint the metal legs and reinstall the bench in its new location north of the playground.

Many donations large and small, plus many people sharing their time and talent, helped Friends of Lake Panorama reach its fundraising goal for the playground. Only donors of $500 or more are recognized here, but thanks to everyone who played a role in making this project a reality.
