McLuen Estate Gift
A couple who wintered in Florida and spent their summers at Lake Panorama left behind a legacy that will have a lasting impact on the Panorama West golf course. James and Joyce McLuen both died in 2016. Twenty percent of their estate was given to Friends of Lake Panorama to be used for "upkeep, beautification or expansion" of the Panorama West golf course.
The McLuens were some of the first homesteaders at the lake, having purchased a lot before there was water. Their home was near Sunset Beach, and they enjoyed boating, fishing and golfing.
Four members of the Friends of Lake Panorama board of directors were on hand to accept the gift that will be used at the Panorama West golf course. Pictured left to right are Jody Muench, Emily Spradling, Kim Lubeck, and Jan Reinicke. Check presenters were William Bump, who handled the McLuen estate; nephews Steve McLuen and Eric McLuen; sister-in-law Dru McLuen; and Dave Grove, Edward Jones.
Kevin and Martin Wood, and Martin’s son Casey, dig out old roots and pea gravel from the south side of the Panorama West clubhouse.
New shrubs were planted on the south side of the clubhouse, where old shrubs were removed by Wood Brothers Landscaping.
The west side of the Panorama West clubhouse now sports a variety of shrubs and perennial flowers. New plastic and river rock surround the plantings to keep weeds at bay and protect the new plants.
A flowering crabapple tree has been installed on the east side of the Panorama West clubhouse, filling in a spot where old shrubs were removed.
Six cast aluminum signs will be added to the course to help direct golfers to par-four tee boxes. Signs like these have become increasingly important as new players discover Panorama West.
Cast aluminum signs like this one will be added to the 15 tee boxes on the Panorama West golf course.
Work on the new irrigation system at Panorama West got underway in late May, and involves trenching in pipe to provide water to all tee boxes, fairways and greens on the golf course.
Before the irrigation pipe is trenched in, strips of sod are removed and set aside. Once the pipe is placed in the trench, workers cover it with dirt, then replace the sod.
This new concrete cart path is adjacent to the par-four tee box on the ninth hole. New paths were built to all par-four tee boxes, plus a section of concrete was added adjacent to par-three tee boxes where none existed
A sign was added to a post near the McLuen bench. It recognizes the couple’s estate gift, which made significant renovations possible at Panorama West.
A bench has been installed near the Panorama West pro shop. The plaque on the bench states: With Deep Appreciation. In Memory of James and Joyce McLuen.
Chalk was used to outline where workers were to dig as they updated six sand bunkers at Panorama West. A backhoe operator handled most of the job on each bunker, while edges were dug by hand to the proper depth and angle.
